ABOUT THE BOOK

It’s about a young girl named Sabriel, from the Old Kingdom, a Kingdom full of the Dead, that was sent across the Wall to a school away from her birth right and land for safety. When she turned 18, she received a distress message containing items from her Father, the Abhorsen, which could only mean he is already dead or in big trouble. The Abhorsen’s task in the Old Kingdom is to lay the disturbed dead back to rest. With the knowledge and skills, Sabriel set out to the Old Kingdom to search for her Father and launched herself into a world of Spirits, Mordicants, Shadow Hands and Charter Magic.

“Five Great Charters knit the land
together linked, hand in hand
One in the people who wear the crown
Two in the folk who keep the Dead down
Three and Five became stone and mortar
Four sees all in the frozen water.”

THE REVIEW

I loved it!

Garth Nix imaginary world is just rich, downright scary, dark yet beautiful. I had to imagine what Sabriel looks like, the armor she is wearing, what her Father, the Abhorsen, looks like and the world she reentered at just 18-years old, fighting the dead, the demons, the evil called Kerrigor; Sabriel seeks her Father’s spirit in the Dead world with the help of Mogget, Touchstone, Clayr members and the surviving villagers of the Old Kingdom.

“Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?”

“Be inside by nightfall. Lock all doors and windows. Deny entry to strangers. Shed light inside and out. Prepare candles and lanterns for when the electricity fails. Wear silver. If caught outdoors, find running waters.”

“Hope that the Charter preserves us all.”
